How To Use A Chain Tool

should immediately replace it with a new one. It



is possible however, to repair a broken chain using

Your chain has three basic components - the metal



side plates, the rollers between the side plates,



and the rivets, or pins which go through the rollers



and help to hold the plates together. These pins



allow the rollers to freely turn as the chain



moves around the cogs.





If your chain happens to break, you'll need to remove



the broken link and replace it with a spare link.



To do this, simply reattach the two ends of the



broken chain and ride on a shorter chain until you



can get it replaced.





To remove a broken link of chain, place it in the



chain tool. Now, turn the tool counter clockwise



until the rivet pin of the chain tool touches



the chain rivet. Continue to turn the tool until



the pin pushes out of the roller. Be very careful,



as you want to stop turning when the pin is right



at the edge of the roller, before it moves through



the outer side plate.





Now, turn the tool in the other direction, and back



it out of the roller. Set the tool to the side,



then work the chain very gently from side to side



and extract the inner side plates and roller.





Now is the time to re-route the chain through the



bike. You may want to have a chain retaining tool



or some to help you hold the chain in the right



spot as you route and repair it.





Now that the broken link has been removed and



you've re-routed the chain, you're ready to insert



a new link or simply connect the links that were



beside the broken one. The process here is the



same - align the two ends so that the link with



the inner side plates will fit inside the link



with the pin and outer side plates. Now, use the



chain tool to push the pin inward until it's



positioned evenly between the side plates.





The easiest way to learn how to do this or feel



comfortable doing it is to have someone show you,



then actually practice with a chain and a chain



tool. You'll have no trouble at all making a



temporary repair in a mountain bike chain once



you've seen it done by a professional and practiced



it yourself a few times.

When I was a kid, my first bicycle was the typical banana seat with training wheels. My next bicycle was a 10-speed which I rode around the neighborhood not knowing how to actually use the gears. When I became an adult I stopped riding all together until a good friend of mine decided we should start bike riding to help shed some extra weight. I thought it was a great idea as there are bike trails in my neighborhood.

It was a mountain bike that they were given and I figured I would be fine using it on the local bike trails. After a few rides, I realized that a mountain bike was not going to cut it. I was constantly leaning forward placing all of my weight on my wrists causing pain after only 20 minutes of riding. It was meant for maneuvering rocky areas and hills, not flat concrete bike trails. I quickly realized I would need to invest in a more comfortable bicycle.





My friend suggested I purchase a comfort bike. She had one and was extremely happy riding it for long periods of time. I went to my local bike shop and came across another version of a comfort bike which is called a hybrid. The hybrid is a mix between mountain bike and comfort bike. This was just my style as I like having the option of being able to ride on other surfaces other than flat concrete. I picked out my bike and took it for a test ride. It was a perfect sized frame and the handles were tall enough (and adjustable) to where I was not leaning forward the way I was on a mountain bike.





The only other adjustment I made was to put on a comfort seat as the stock seat was extremely uncomfortable even for short rides. Another great thing about hybrid bicycles is that you can customize them to lean more towards being a mountain bike or being a comfort bike. While my hybrid is more about comfort, I can still take it out on a mountain bike trail and feel fine. I have rode for a couple hours at the most on my hybrid bicycle and had no pain or discomfort after. Now bike riding is a fun part of my exercise regimen and helps me to maintain a healthy weight. History's first bicycles had no brakes. Band-aids hadn't yet been invented, so the next logical step was to devise a stopping system. Thus, brakes were born to help riders slow down and stop, and bicycles suddenly became more popular. By increasing frictional force on the wheels, cyclists were able to slow down and stop.





The first widely used braking system was called "the plunger". It first appeared on the high-wheeled bicycles that were popular in the 1800s. The plunger operated on a simple principle. To slow down a bicycle, a lever was either pressed down or pulled up, causing a metal show to press against the outer side of the tire. Of course, the friction created caused excess wear and tear on the tire. Cyclists found that the plunger did not work well with pneumatic tires, even after covering the metal shoe with rubber. Wet surfaces were another drawback, as water decreased the friction between the brake shoe and tire, reducing the braking power.





The next major development in bicycle brakes was the "coaster brake". Most of us have used coaster brakes, still popular in pint-size toddler bikes and tricycles. Some utility bicycles and cruisers also use coaster brakes. The concept behind coaster brakes is simple reverse motion. When the pedals are moved in a reverse direction, the brake mechanism inside the hub of the wheel pushes outward, creating friction and slowing down the bike. Coaster brakes are quite strong and tend to lock up and skid the rear wheel when engaged, so they're great choices for sidewalk burnouts.





Most of today's mountain, road and stunt bikes use caliper rim brakes. By pulling a lever, a cable is tightened. This cable then forces the brake pads or shoes to press against the inner rim of the wheel, stopping the bike. Caliper bicycle brakes are light and relatively inexpensive, but they do come with their own set of problems. Not hugely efficient on rainy days, wet brakes take twice as long to stop a bicycle because the water reduces friction between the brake and the wheel. Caliper brakes work best when pressure is applied gently.





It is important to balance the braking between the front and rear brakes while riding. If too much brake pressure is applied to the front wheel, your momentum and body inertia will take you right over the handlebars.





Over the decades, braking systems and materials have changed, but the fundamentals of slowing and stopping a bicycle have not. Bicycle brakes are still based on the concept of friction, and are still vitally important to your safety.
